It's winter here at the farm and we have been dealing with snow. It's impact on our plants animals can be devastating and affect your food production long into the spring and summer.
Some important reminders for freezing temps:
Wrap your beehives with insulating and waterproof materials. Keeping the hives insulated will prevent your bees from freezing or starving to death. If they get to cold they won't be able to move and eat the stores they have made for the winter. This is why it is critical to have them shielded from winds.
DO NOT OPEN THE HIVE TO CHECK ON YOUR BEES! It has to be at least 50 degrees Fahrenheit/ 10 degrees Celsius . Though, I would wait for almost 60 degrees Fahrenheit or 15.5 degrees Celsius, for their sake.
Check on all your outdoor animals and inspect their enclosures. Remove damp items, replace with dry and clean bedding, and seal up cracks or areas where heat is lost.
Feed MORE! Your animals will need more energy to keep their body temperature up. If you feed twice daily, add an extra feeding.
Dehydration can happen in winter! Water freezes up in low temperatures and the air can be dry. Make sure plenty of warm water is available. for your animals that don't drink much give fresh vegetables with high water content frequently. Remember, everything is going to freeze so frequent trips to replace the food and water is critical.
That's all for right now! Keep checking back for new tips and information on opportunities available at the Garden.
